This Project entailed the architectural and interior ergonomic design of a Centralized Control Building as part of a major expansion of Takreer’s Ruwais Refinery, which constitutes the largest single refinery in the Middle East.
The Control Building’s exterior is made with corrugated stainless steel sheets, highlighting the deep relationship between the Control Building and the plant itself – whose pipes, vessels, tanks and processes are made of the same material. As an alternative, Spazio also designed an exterior façade covered with an extensive system of vertical gardens.
Our aim was to design a work environment that facilitates operator alertness through sensorial stimulation, ultimately improving the workspace’s efficiency and security. Large glass partition apertures, curved lines and carefully curated finishes and furnishings contribute to the space’s richness in sensorial stimulation.
The Control Room’s walls and ceilings are fully cladded with custom-made wooden panels providing high-quality acoustic properties to the workspace which facilitate speech intelligibility.
The building’s ergonomic lighting design is a blend of Our Dynamic Lighting System, designed to significantly improve human alertness and efficiency within 24/7 and high-stress work environments, and natural lighting, which shines through blast-resistant skylights and windows. The seamless integration of artificial and natural lighting aims to maximise workers’ productivity whilst providing comfort and lowering stress levels.
A two-story vertical garden of 625 sqm brings life to the Control Room, ameliorating internal air quality, boosting operators’ morale and reducing stress-levels.
